The Tyrone Area High School Marching Band was honored to have been selected to participate in the Macy’s “Celebrate the Season” Holiday Parade in Pittsburgh on Saturday, November 25.
The students and chaperones boarded a chartered bus at 3:45 a.m. with pillows in hand. They were all extremely tired because of the Tyrone football game on Friday night and not getting back to the school until 11 p.m.; however, their tiredness did not dampen their enthusiasm. Upon arrival at the Mellon Arena, the band was all ready to march the 2.5 mile parade route throughout downtown Pittsburgh. The parade was sponsored by Macy’s and Pittsburgh television station WPXI, Channel 11, who broadcasted the parade live. The streets of Pittsburgh were filled with appreciative people. They graciously applauded as the band marched, and played holiday music, down the parade route. You could see the smiles on the faces of those waiting for several hours to watch the parade, which included several people from the Tyrone area.
Many people in the Pittsburgh area asked where our band was from. When told that we were approximately 120 miles from home there were comments like, “Your community should be so proud of your band for traveling so far to participate in this parade,” and “We’re so pleased. You represent your community so proudly.”
The Tyrone Marching Band and Band Boosters would like to thank all of those that showed general community support, whether it be through monetary donations, traveling to Pittsburgh to watch the parade from the streets or just by saying kind words about the band’s appearance.
A special “thank you” to Chicago Rivet, Ken Chertow’s Gold Medal Wrestling Camp, Dr. & Mrs. Devlin, Jodi Wallace, the Tyrone Area School District Board of Directors, the Tyrone School District faculty and staff and the Tyrone Football Boosters. Again, many thanks to all of the Tyrone community for your support of the Marching Band program.
