Beginning Monday, November 20, the Blair County Compost Facility\’s operating hours are changing to the winter schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 am to 4 p.m.. The facility, located on Blacksnake Road on the Buckhorn, is closed to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and all County holidays.
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday and the safety of our clientele and staff during the opening of deer season, the facility will close Tuesday, November 21, at 4 p.m. and reopen Thursday, November 30, at 8 a.m.
Leaves, brush, grass clippings, and Christmas trees are accepted at the facility during regularly scheduled operating days. Other items that are collected at the site for recycling are magazines, catalogs, phonebooks, newspapers, junk mail, glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, green), cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic jugs and bottles, tin and aluminum cans, used motor oil, fluorescent bulbs, CDs, DVDs, hard cover books, paperback books, and cell phones. Used oil filters and used cooking oil are accepted for a small fee.
Directions: from Altoona, take Route 36 North to Skyline Drive. Make a right turn onto Skyline Drive then a quick left turn onto Blacksnake Road. The Compost Facility is located about 1?4 mile down Blacksnake Road.
