The Tyrone Area School District has scheduled its fifth annual Distinguished Alumni Recognition Weekend for October 20-21.
This year’s distinguished alumni include: Larry J. Nulton, Ph.D., Captain Donald H. Barrett (US Navy, Retired), Gary L. McGovern and Monsignor Richard J. Walsh.
Biographies of the alumni were included in the school district’s magazine TyNotes, which appeared as an insert last week in The Daily Herald. The biographies will be reprinted as a series in The Herald starting on Monday.
There are many planned activities for the Distinguished Alumni Recognition Weekend.
On Friday, the honorees will have breakfast at the Tyrone Area High School in the Eagle Inn and will be welcomed by Dr. Miller, followed by presentations by Dr. Erb and Dr. Vendetti.
This will be followed by an assembly in the auditorium for all students grades 11 and 12, and the assembly is open to the public. The honorees will get a chance to speak at this time.
After the assembly, the alumni will make classroom visits for remarks and discussions with students.
After lunch, there will be a technology presentation for the honorees by Glen Drager, followed by a tour of the new middle school addition.
To round out the day, honorees will attend the home football game against Indian Valley with a recognition ceremony at half time.
On Saturday at 6 p.m., there will be a recognition dinner at the Bull Pen Restaurant. Each honoree will be introduced individually and given the opportunity to speak.
For many years, Tyrone Area High School has produced outstanding graduates who have achieved great things. The Tyrone Area School District created the Distinguished Alumni Award that was presented for the first time in the fall of 2002.
For a person to be considered for this award, nomination materials must be sent to the Tyrone Area School District Superintendent’s Office, 701 Clay Avenue, Tyrone, PA 16686. The nomination materials include a completed nomination form, the candidate’s resume or vita and three letters of support.
A panel of judges (one graduate from each decade since 1940) will evaluate each nomination. No more than three winners will be chosen in any selection period. The chosen honorees will attend an Alumni Awards Weekend in October. Nominations will remain active for two selection periods.
