The first-ever Tipton Run Tee Off to help fight Cystic Fibrosis is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Tipton Golf Course.
The event will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Betsy Rhodes.
Teams of two are set to tee off at 9 a.m. and the top winners will be awarded monetary and/or material prizes. The entry fee is $40 total per team (two participants per team) and includes the greens fee, a basket of balls to hit on the range, drinks and snacks and according to a flyer about the event, “a great day with friends for a good cause.”
The flyer said donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation help fund research and discoveries “that are forming the front line of exciting new medical treatments.”
The flyer said the understanding of the disease “has rapidly accelerated in the past few years due, in large part, to science supported by the CF foundation.”
The flyer also stated that the foundation is “proud to have been recognized by SmartMoney (the magazine of The Wall Street Journal), as a charity that ‘won’t waste your money.’”
According to information on the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Web site (www.cff.org), Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 people in the United States. For people with the disease, a defective gene causes the body to produce a faulty protein that leads to abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and can result in fatal lung infections. The mucus also obstructs the pancreas, causing difficulty for a person to absorb nutrients in food and can block the bile duct in the liver, eventually causing permanent damage in approximately six percent of people with CF.
