A Bellwood man was one of two people killed in an accident that happened Sunday at 2:28 p.m. on State Route 22, 1.6 miles east of Geeseytown, Frankstown Township.
State police said a vehicle operated by 80-year-old Carey R. Garman of Bellwood was traveling east on Route 22 while a car driven by 75-year-old Russell Crownover of Williamsburg was traveling west.
Garman’s vehicle crossed into the west bound lane of the road and struck the right side of Crownover’s car. Garman’s car continued traveling up an embankment on the north side of the road. His car then came back onto Route 22 and continued to travel east.
About three-tenths of a mile east of hitting the other vehicle, Garman’s car traveled onto the south berm of the road and went into a ditch. The front end of the car hit some rocks in the ditch and then came to a final rest on the south berm of the road on its right side facing north.
Garman and his passenger, 83-year-old Ivie F. Manbeck of Altoona, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Both were wearing seat belts. Crownover was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. A passenger in his car, 65-year-old Sandra Crownover of Williamsburg, was not wearing a seat belt and escaped injury.
Garman’s car had severe damage while Crownover’s car had damage to its right-front quarter panel and right mirror.
State police were assisted at the scene of the accident by the Frankstown Township Fire Department and Hollidaysburg/Duncansville Ambulance. Jeff Guyer of the Blair County Coroner’s office was also at the scene.
An obituary for Mr. Garman published in yesterday’s Daily Herald noted there will be visitation for him from 6 to 8 this evening at the Vincent J. Good Funeral Parlor in Bellwood. Interment at Antis Cemetery.
