A 26-year-old man, Shawn Michael Hinterberger of Duncansville, who was subjected to electronic monitoring, left his place of work in Snyder Township Thursday morning as prison officials were arriving for a routine check.
Yesterday around 3 p.m., Hinterberger was spotted by police between Goods Lane and Interstate 99 approximately 1/2 mile west of Plank Road in Logan Township.
Logan Township and State Police responded to the area and observed Hinterberger, who fled into the woods.
According to the police report, Hinterberger allegedly displayed a weapon and threatened to use the weapon on the Logan Township Officer. The officer fired his weapon in response to the threat.
Hinterberger was transported to the Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Campus. Blair County Sheriff Deputies are providing 24-hour security.
The police report listed the nature of the incident as criminal attempt homicide with the victim as a Logan Township Police Officer and the suspect as Hinterberger.
Numerous police departments throughout Blair County assisted at the scene, and Blair County District Attorney Richard Consiglio was also on the scene.
The investigation continues.
Blair County Prison Captain Mike Johnston told The Daily Herald Friday morning that he and another prison official arrived at the P G Recycling Inc. on old Route 220 to make a routine check on Hinterberger.
At that point, Hinterberger headed to the back of the building. Johnston said he had verbal contact with Hinterberger who said he was going to his employer’s office. Hinterberger then went out the back door. Johnston said he was about 40 feet away from Hinterberger when he spoke to him.
Sheriff Larry Field said he had received word from another police official that the man’s father reported a shotgun missing from his home. Field could not say if there was a connection between Hinterberger’s departure and the missing gun.
Field said one of his deputies, Dale Delozier gave chase in the incident and both he and Hinterberger fell down an embankment. Hinterberger eventually got away. Field said Delozier suffered a slight injury and his bullet-proof vest saved him from further injury although his uniform was damaged.
Hinterberger was due to be released in September, according to Field.
