Altoona Community Theatre has announced nominations for the Isaacs, a new awards program to recognize student achievement in high school musicals in Cambria and Blair counties.
The awards are styled after the Oscars and the Tonys and are named “The Isaacs” after Isaac Mishler, founder and builder of Altoona’s historic Mishler Theatre.
Judges selected by ACT attended performances at 10 participating schools. Categories include best actor in a leading role, best actress in a leading role, best actor in a supporting role, best actress in a supporting role, best number and best production.
Local nominations include best actor in a leading role for Jonathan Harris as The Baker in Tyrone Area High School’s recent production of Into The Woods.
Harris is a sophomore at TAHS and has experience from last year’s show “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” playing Schroder.
Harris enjoys singing in POPS Extension and concert choir and also enjoys attending Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Harris attended District 6 and Region 3 chorus festivals this year.
The TAHS production Into The Woods was also nominated for an award in the best production category.
The final awardees will be kept secret until the Isaac Awards Ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, May 14 at 8 p.m. at the Mishler Theatre. There may be other awards in addition to those listed.
The event will be black-tie optional and will include musical numbers from some of the nominated schools.
