The Tyrone Kiwanis Club is finalizing plans for its seventh annual Dick Dutrow Memorial Golf Tournament to be held at the Sinking Valley Country Club on Friday, May 12.
Kiwanis member Pete Dutrow, one of Dick’s sons, once again is chairing the annual event, which is held to raise funds for the Kiwanis Club’s various projects. Most of these projects center on the Kiwanis International theme of “Service Children of the World”.
“We urge business, industry, and individuals to take part in the tournament. We will use a four-person scramble with a shot gun start at 11 a.m. We will conclude the day with dinner and award presentations. We urge area golfers to take part, either with a foursome or individually. We will pair you up with other smaller groups or individuals as appropriate,” said Dutrow.
Most of the Tyrone Kiwanis funds are used to support local projects such as: smoke detectors for newborns, Special Olympics, Tyrone Library, Salvation Army and various athletic teams. The club also supports the Tyrone Area School District’s “Terrific Kids”, Builders Club and Key Club programs. Annually, the club provides several scholarships. In addition, Kiwanians volunteer at Epworth Manor, Tyrone Area Food Bank, the Salvation Army and Railroad Museum.
Through the Pennsylvania District Kiwanis, the local club also provides support for orphanages in Jamaica and Bulgaria.
“This golf tournament quickly became an important part of our Kiwanis year,” Dutrow said, “not only because our generous sponsors and golfers provided much-needed funds for our annual budget, but also because it gave all the golfers and Kiwanians a wonderful day of golf and fellowship.”
