The Tyrone Area School District offers a four-year-old (K4) program to children in the district.
Funded through Title I, the K4 classes provide youngsters with hands-on, fun and challenging activities helping them to acquire early readiness skills. Particular emphasis is placed on providing literature and language experiences crucial to later reading success. A highly-qualified paraprofessional provides teacher assistance and student support in each classroom. The preschool curriculum is based on the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards for high-quality early childhood programs.
In addition to the classroom experience, the students also benefit from home visits by the K4 teacher. These visits allow the teacher to respond to each child’s individual needs. The teacher and parent work in partnership to provide greater instructional consistency for the child. Communication and learning continue between the teacher and preschool families during the summer months via activity calendars that are sent to homes. The calendars reinforce skills that were learned during the school year.
Tyrone Area School District offers morning and afternoon K4 classes, four days a week. The program is free to families who reside in the school district. Applications are accepted for children who turn four years of age by August 31. Students are selected for the program based on results of several literacy assessments.

Parent Tip: Reinforce the importance of reading by letting your child see you read throughout the day including for pleasure in your spare time. Also, remember that not all reading takes place between the covers of a book. What about menus, road signs, food labels, maps, and sheet music? Take advantage of countless spur-of-the-moment opportunities for reading during the course of your family’s busy day.
