The Tyrone Area School District has been honored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for academic achievements.
Tyrone Area received two different awards last month from the PDE according to a release from the district.
On Jan. 13, the PDE honored the Tyrone Area Elementary School and High School with an award for meeting the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards for two consecutive years. The Middle School was honored with an award for meeting AYP for the first year.
“We’re very pleased, obviously, with the result for meeting the AYP…” said Superintendent Dr. William N. Miller. “We’re most appreciative of the effort of our staff and the commitment of our students. I think it’s a reflection of staff, community and students. We are glad to join the group of school districts throughout the state that have received this award.
According to the press release, the keystone-shaped award is being awarded to schools across the state where students have exceeded the math and reading standards required by the state’s accountability system and the federal No Child Left Behind Act. To meet AYP in the 2003-04 school year, at least 35 percent of students needed to reach proficiency in math and 45 percent proficiency in reading.
For the 2004-05 and the current year, proficiency standards were raised to 45 percent proficiency in math and 54 percent in reading.
The press release noted the elementary school and high school are receiving their second Keystone Achievement Awards for high achieving students. This is the first year the Middle School received the award.
The press release reiterated Dr. Miller’s thoughts by noting, “the teachers, school staff, parents and community and students have worked hard to achieve at this level.”
This is the second year that the PDE has issued the awards. The PDE and the Pennsylvania Association of Federal Program Coordinators have partnered to create the Keystone Achievement Award.
The release from the district noted 2,234 schools statewide will receive the award this year. Among those schools, 1,567 are receiving it for a second time.
The awards will be on display at the elementary, middle and high school in the Tyrone Area School District.
