The Blair County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling and the Conservation District have scheduled a community service event at the new Blair County Research and Demonstration Compost Facility.
Real, undecorated Christmas trees will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, January 14 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18.
The facility is located along Route 220, one mile south of the intersection of routes 22 and 220, at the fenced lot a quarter mile past Inlows Restaurant.
According to its website, the Blair County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling’s winter hours began the Monday before Thanksgiving and will end April 1.
Regular days and hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The facility is closed every Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and all county holidays.
Materials accepted at the facility for recycling include: newspaper and phonebooks, magazines and catalogs, junk mail and office paper, used oil (motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid), corrugated cardboard, steel (tin) cans and aluminum cans, books (remove hard back book covers and keep separate) and toner cartridges.
Also, CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes, cell phones, used oil filters (fee: one to five filters – $1, six to 10 filters – $2, etc.), used cooking oil, glass bottles and jars (green, clear and brown) and fluorescent bulbs.
There are also drop-off centers located at the Snyder Township municipal building and at the Tyrone District Justice\’s office. Drop-off centers accept aluminum beverage cans, metal food cans, plastic No. 1 and No. 2 bottles, corrugated cardboard, newspapers and telephone books.
For proper preparation of recyclable materials, empty and rinse cans, plastic bottles and jugs. Remove and discard all caps and lids; however, labels may remain on the cans, plastic bottles and jugs. Flatten metal cans and plastic bottles and jugs, if possible, put newspapers in paper bags and keep them separate from magazines and catalogs, flatten cardboard and keep all paper products dry.
