John Howard “Yankee” Payne, 61, of Highway 22, County Line, Mount Union, died at his residence Sunday, December 18, 2005.
He was born June 26, 1944 at Canonsburg, Washington Co., a son of Russell J. and Helen A. (Carper) Payne.
He is survived by a daughter Tina Snyder of Mount Union; sons James and Russell Payne of Shade Gap and Shawn Prough of Shade Gap; a grandson John H. Payne, III and his mother Amy Breon of Tipton and five other grandchildren. Also, three brothers and one sister, Richard C. “Duce” Payne of Huntingdon, Russell J. “Buck” Payne, Jr. of Mount Union, Elwood C. Payne of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Georgia Garlock of Mapleton Depot, his longtime companion Barbara Stamm of Tyrone and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son John H. Payne, Jr. and a brother Joseph H. Payne, Sr.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era. He was a motorcycle and Harley-Davidson enthusiast and a member of various motorcycle clubs in the area.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 8 p.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Pastor David Bailey officiating. Interment will be at Eastlawn Cemetery, Snyder Township.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
