Reverend Dr. James A. Woomer Sr., age 90, of 401 Jacob Albright Drive, Johnstown, PA died Thursday, November 24, 2005 at Arbutus Manor, Johnstown.
He was born June 30, 1915 in Tyrone, the son of Arthur L. and Mabel C. Burford Woomer and on March 19, 1938 he was married at the United Brethren Parsonage in Tyrone by Reverend J.S. Colledge to Marietta Getz. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, two sons: James A. Woomer Jr. and wife Muriel of Hollidaysburg; Dr. D. Darrell Woomer and wife Audrey of Palmyra, PA; five grandchildren: Rebecca Woomer, James Woomer III and wife Kerryann, Katherine, wife of Matthew Ozio, David Woomer and Laura Woomer; three great-grandchildren: Noel and Olivia Ozio and Emerson Woomer. Also surviving is one sister, Betty Harper of Tyrone, RD 3. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Emerson Woomer in 1991 and two brothers, Robert and Donald.
He was a graduate of Tyrone High School Class of 1933 and graduated from Juniata College in 1940 and United Theological Seminary, Dayton, OH in 1943 and received his Doctor of Divinity from Indiana Central University in 1970 and received clinical pastoral education in Dayton, OH. He retired in 1979 after 45 years service with the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Brethren Church and with the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. Following retirement he served for 15 years as Minister of Visitation in Naples, FL at the North Naples United Methodist Church. In addition to his various charges he served as a District Superintendent in the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the Methodist Church. He attended the Belmont United Methodist Church, Johnstown, was a member of the Tyrone Historical Society and a former Rotarian.
Funeral service for Dr. Woomer will be held Sunday, November 27, 2005 at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. at 9 p.m. with Reverend Norman E. Huff officiating. Interment at the convenience of the family will be made in Bald Eagle Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Belmont United Methodist Church with Reverend David Evans officiating.
