The Kiwanis Club of Tyrone would like to thank all those individuals who supported what turned out to be the club’s most successful coat and paper drives held this past Saturday.
The Tyrone Salvation Army Service Unit will be able to help many children and adults in the Tyrone area stay warm this winter.
Over 300 items of coats and hats were collected in a three-hour time span. Kiwanis coat drive chairperson Chuck Banas said it was great to be able to help the needy of the Tyrone area.
However, only six children’s coats were collected. Bob Maser, Tyrone Kiwanis and Salvation Army representative, said more children’s and young adults’ coats are needed. If anyone has these sizes of coats to donate, they may drop them off at the G & R Excavating building located across from Reclamere on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the next three weeks.
The Tyrone Salvation Army Service Unit will be giving out free coats, hats and other warm items on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, starting today from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the G & R Excavating building. The last day will be Thursday, November 18.
This is the tenth year for the coat drive, held in conjunction with the Salvation Army.
Items collected on Saturday included children and adult coats, winter hats, boots, mittens, gloves and new toys.
So far, the community and surrounding areas have donated over 1,800 coats, along with other items.
One Tyrone church has already knitted 56 tousle caps to be donated to the drive this year.
The paper drive held this past Saturday for the Teener League was also very successful. Bob Clites, president of the Teener League, estimates that this was the largest paper drive carried out in the Tyrone area.
As an ongoing fund raiser, members of Tyrone VFW Teener baseball are collecting newspapers and magazines. Individuals may drop off newspapers or magazines at 1454 Bald Eagle Ave., or 504 W. 15th St., or call 684-5177 or 684-0509 for a pick-up.
Tyrone Kiwanis President Norm Huff would like to thank all those Kiwanians who helped with the coat and paper drive and congratulate them on a job well done.
