n a time of great need, the Tipton Fire Company stepped up to the plate, raising money for the Red Cross to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Members of the fire company were on hand earlier this week to present a check to the American Red Cross.
Representatives of the fire company included: Fire Company President Dave Peterson, Sr.; Assistant Chief Shane Miller; Chairman of Bingo Promotions Scott Orolin; bingo employee Tina Orolin and Trustee Steve Orolin. The group presented the check, totaling $5,050, to Red Cross representative Barb Taylor.
The money was raised through two late night bingo sessions which were held on September 17 and 24.
“The response was overwhelming,” said Scott Orolin. “We just want to thank the bingo family for coming out and supporting such a wonderful cause.”
Orolin was pleased with the generosity of those in attendance, saying a portion of the money raised came from donations.
“Everyone donated back a portion of their winnings.”
He said instead of taking a $100 prize, the winners accepted $80 and donated $20, to be given to the Red Cross. Several individuals also gave personal donations in order to show their support.
Barb Taylor, a representative from the Red Cross, who was on hand to accept the fire company’s contribution, expressed her gratitude to the fire company and the bingo participants for their help.
“We appreciate all who help provide this immediate support,” Taylor said.
Right now, according to Taylor, there are 900,000 individuals who are homeless at this time.
She said some of those individuals are temporarily housed in central Pennsylvania, so any help is greatly appreciated.
