Get ready, get set, walk! Blair Senior Services is recruiting walkers for the twelfth annual \”Miles For Meals and Wheels Walk-A-Thon\” at the Blair County Ball Park on Saturday, August 20 at 10 a.m.
The walk helps to raise the funds needed so that older adults in Blair County can continue to have access to nutritious meals and door-to-door, wheel chair accessible transportation to medical appointments, senior centers and other places that they need and want to go.
Last year, Blair Senior Services\’ \”Meals on Wheels\” volunteers delivered more than 126,000 meals to homes throughout Blair County. In addition to providing frailer older adults with the nutritional support they need to remain in their own homes, the volunteers provide the daily contact that ensures safety and health maintenance.
Blair Senior Services’ Transportation Program provided more than 150,000 one-way trips during that same time period. The courteous and professional drivers come right to the door and offer the assistance needed to get the individual and their walker or wheel chair onto the van safely.
Register today as an individual walker or a team of four or more. All walkers receive a goodie bag and the opportunity to win door prizes. The top fundraising walkers and teams win prizes and everyone who raises $75, gets a 2005 \”Miles for Meals and Wheels Walk-A-Thon\” T-shirt.
Enjoy a morning of entertainment and refreshments at Blair County Ball Park, as individuals raise funds for these two vital services. Transportation to the walk is available for walkers over 60 years of age. Registration opens at 9. The PEPPI (Peer Exercise Program Promotes Independence) will help walkers stretch their muscles prior to the 10 a.m. kick-off lap. There is no pre-set amount of laps to be covered. Each walker is free to set his or her own pace and goals.
Most of the following corporate benefactors will have informational booths at Blair Ball Park: Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries, Altoona Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center, the Altoona Housing Authority, Colonial Courtyard, Epworth Manor, Home Instead Senior Care, Homewood at Martinsburg, Outlook Pointe, Sorbera Chiropractic, WellnessOne of Altoona and Wesner\’s Claysburg Manor.
Blair Senior Services is a charitable organization that is dedicated to helping older Blair County residents live full and productive lives. This year, the Agency is facing a significant gap between available funding and the resources needed to meet the needs of older adults in the community. It is because of the volunteers who walk and raise money each year that Blair Senior Services is able to provide these two very valuable and important programs.
