At their weekly meetings, the Tyrone Kiwanis Club passed the basket for two weeks in July in order to help with the Blossom Garden Orphanage in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Through the efforts of the club a total of $100 has been raised. A total of $6 will provide daily multiple vitamins for one of the children for one year. With the money that was collected by Tyrone Kiwanis, members will be able to bring daily multiple vitamins to a total of slightly over 16 children at Blossom Garden Orphanage for one year.
In light of the damages that have occurred on the island during the past two hurricanes that hit Jamaica, the Jamaican government has had to spend a great deal of money on clean up and infrastructure repairs.
Thus the timing of the monetary support for the children at Blossom Garden could not have come at a better time.
Also, the Tyrone Kiwanis Club has supported the drug awareness program for the third year.
Tyrone Kiwanis is again donating $300 this year to the Homerun Against Drug program. This will bring the total of support for this program to $900. This is a drug awareness program that deals with educating younger students in the second grade concerning the problems with drugs.
This program is presented in the Tyrone, Bellwood and St. Matthew’s Schools for second graders and has received rave reviews from local educators. Each student receives a booklet, and the Tyrone Kiwanis Club will be listed as a major sponsor of the program.
