“Disappointed, to say the least,” is how the Sinking Valley Presbyterian Haitian Mission Team responded when they learned one week ago that their long-planned work trip to Haiti would be postponed. Plans to assist local missionaries Rodney and Sharyn Babe were scrapped due to escalating civil unrest, which had spread into the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Roadblocks, kidnappings, and random violence forced the “evacuation” of non-essential visitors to Haiti as well as the missionary Babes.
Local residents Gary DiDomenico, John Conrad, Jim Crawford, Ron Morris, and Bill Harshman, plus five out-of-area team members, wish to assure local residents who supported their fund-raising efforts that all funds entrusted to the project have been preserved for future work team expenses. They extend deepest appreciation to the community. All team members have expressed a strong desire to make the trip to Haiti upon a return to calmer conditions.
Drought, hurricane, and political problems have deepened Haiti’s poverty and created a chaotic and desperate circumstance for the poorest people of the western hemisphere.
