Forecasters are calling for temperatures approaching 70 today with the chance of showers and a thunderstorm.
The forecast calls for chance of showers tonight and more rain possible on Sunday and Monday with highs in 70s Sunday and around 70 on Monday.
However, none of the three days is expected to be a total washout which bodes well for those with outdoor activities on their mind for the long holiday weekend.
Event organizers have planned a number of activities to commemorate Memorial Day.
Bellwood’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30 will form at Houser’s Grocery store on North 4th Street at 9 a.m. and begin at 9:30 a.m. The parade will proceed from 4th Street to Main Street to Martin Street and then to the Logan Valley Cemetery where services will be held at 10 a.m.
After the service, parade watchers and participants are welcome to the U.V.H.A. club on Main Street for refreshments and to see the unique hand-painted mural honoring all Veterans of past wars.
A little later on Monday, a Memorial Day service is scheduled at the American Legion (Soldier’s) Park at 11 a.m. The main speaker for the event will be Tyrone Police Chief Joseph Beachem. The Legion’s Talmadge Cupp is scheduled to introduce Chief Beachem. The event will also be broadcast by WTRN radio.
Cupp said veterans and military personnel would also be attending church services. The annual tradition of placing flags at gravesites of deceased military men and women is also taking place this weekend. Previously, more than 1,000 crosses had been put in place at Soldier’s Park with the assistance of area volunteers.
WTRN is also broadcasting “An American Tribute” on Monday, May 30 from noon to 3 p.m. The program is being hosted by Bill Dann. It is scheduled to feature “often-requested flag-wavin’ favorites” and is being sponsored by several area businesses.
Antis Township supervisor Ray Amato noted this weekend marks the start of everyday activities at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park in the township. The waterworks and rapids are scheduled to open for the first time this season today. The Jaffa Car Show and Blair Senior Services Day are scheduled on Sunday at the park. On Monday, veterans and military personnel will “ride and slide” for free.
Amato also noted the community pool will be open as of today. For more information on the pool season, interested parties should call the pool at 742-7662 or the Hollidaysburg YMCA at 695-4467. More information can also be found on the Internet at www.antistownship.org.
Amato said township ballfields would be in use this weekend including games scheduled on Monday.
Tyrone’s community pool at Reservoir Park is also scheduled to open today after recently completed renovations and upgrades to its bathhouse facilities.
In addition to many family picnics which have been privately planned, Tyrone Moose Lodge 25 will hold their annual Memorial Day chicken barbecue on today beginning at 11 a.m. The meal includes half a chicken, baked beans, macaroni salad and a roll. Call 684-4370 for more information.
Another “start of the summer” tradition continues this weekend in the form of minor league baseball. The area’s AA team, the Altoona Curve is scheduled to play games tonight at 7:05, Sunday at 6:05 p.m. and on Monday with a scheduled Noontime first pitch.
