A Tyrone woman alerted borough police to a phone scam earlier this week.
Gloria Harris said she received the call at her residence on the 900 block of Lincoln Avenue on Monday. She told police the caller informed her she had won $189,000, but in order to receive it she had to send $2,800.
The call apparently came from the Las Vegas, NV area. Tyrone police contacted authorities there to try and locate the address of the caller. Those efforts yielded negative results.
Harris was advised to contact Tyrone police if she received anymore such calls.
Chief Joe Beachem said this is not a new scam and residents in the borough have reported other calls in the past where they were told they had won money but had to pay to get it.
“This is the only one reported (recently),” said Beachem.
He said there were other reports received earlier this year in the late winter/early spring. He also said some of the “scam” calls of this type have come from Canada.
