Next to be highlighted in The Daily Herald’s spotlight on area churches is Tyrone Church of the Brethren, St. John’s Lutheran Church and Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church.
Pastor Jeff Miley is currently at Tyrone Church of the Brethren, located at 500 W. 18th St., Tyrone.
The board chairperson is Tom Dickson, and the secretary is Joan Lucas. Wednesday is prayer/Bible study at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday School is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Worship is at 10:35 a.m.
The church was organized in 1894, and the current sanctuary was built in 1957, with the fellowship hall and classrooms added in 1983.
Christmas Cantata Sunday service is scheduled for December 19 at the church. Also, Christmas Eve service is at 7 p.m. at the church.
Women’s Fellowship meets the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., and Men’s Fellowship meets the second Saturday of the month at 6 p.m.
“Reaching Out In Christian Love” is the church’s mission statement.
The current pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sinking Valley is Heather Culuris.
Sunday service is held at 11 a.m., and Sunday School is scheduled for the first Sunday of the month. St. John’s hosts an inter-generational Sunday School beginning at 9:30 a.m., including breakfast, fellowship time and a lesson.
St. John’s Lutheran Church was founded in Sinking Valley 200 years ago and recently celebrated its 200th anniversary in October. The congregation continues the ministry begun by those early families by reaching out to the contemporary families of Sinking Valley. St. John’s is part of a two congregation parish with Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church.
Parish activities include: youth group, confirmation classes for seventh and eighth graders, first communion classes for second graders, Sunday School on the first Sunday of the month, Sunday School hay rides and dinners, Vacation Bible School, involvement with the Sinking Valley Farm Show and a summer parish picnic.
Christmas events include a children’s pageant on Sunday, December 19. Christmas Eve Service will be at 6:30 p.m. on December 24.
The current pastor of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church is also currently Heather Culuris.
The church is located on Kettle Road about three miles from Altoona.
Sunday service is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church is a little over 100 years old. It is part of a two-point parish which includes St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Sunday, December 19 at 9:15 a.m. there will be a service of Lessons and Carols for worship.
Christmas Eve Worship will be at 8:30 p.m. on December 24.
