This information is just in time for everybody who has deep-fried their Thanksgiving turkeys or is planning to deep-fry their Christmas turkeys this year and need a way to dispose of the used cooking oil.
For a small fee, the Blair County Compost Facility accepts used cooking oil from residents for recycling. The cost: under three gallons is free, three to five gallons is $1, six to 10 gallons is $2 and 11 to 15 gallons is $3.
No commercial establishments, please.
Besides accepting used cooking oil for recycling, the facility also accepts newspapers and phone books, magazines and catalogs, junk mail and office paper, used motor oil (transmission fluid, power steering fluid), No. 1 and No. 2 plastic bottles and jugs, corrugated cardboard, steel (tin) cans, and aluminum cans.
Used oil filters are accepted for a fee (one to five filters is $1, six to 10 filters is $2 and 11 to 15 filters is $3. Of course, the compost facility also accepts yard waste, leaves, grass clippings, brush, tree trimmings and Christmas trees.
The Blair County Compost Facility is open year-round and is located on Blacksnake Road near Ashville.
Winter Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday until the week of April 1. During the remainder of the winter schedule, the site will be closed on the following county holidays: Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President’s Day and Good Friday.
