Engelman Florist and Greenhouses will host an open house tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m.
The event is every year to kick off the holiday season.
Now available at the greenhouse are Poinsettias, Cyclamen, Christmas arrangements and wreaths and cemetery blankets and wreaths.
“We’ve always done this,” said Lorey Burghard, “to get people thinking about poinsettias and holiday arrangements.
“Our poinsettias come in a lot of different colors besides red.”
Burghard also pointed out that at one time, many people thought poinsettias were poisonous, however, it was determined that the quantity consumed would have to be so large that the flowers really are not poisonous.
This year Engelman has invited Mt. Nittany Winery to provide wine sampling during the open house.
It may seem like a well-kept secret but Pennsylvania is the U.S. birthplace of commercial vineyards and wineries and is currently home to over 90 wineries. Pennsylvania is ranked fifth nationally in the number of wineries, fifth in the production of grapes and eighth in the production of wine from grapes.
A large portion of Pennsylvania grapes are sent to wineries in New York and Ohio. Almost all wine making grapes have an area where they are able to grow in Pennsylvania.
The wine sampling will provide a chance for individuals to try something new while getting into the holiday spirit.
Also, Floral Designer, Jim Beatty, will be available throughout the evening to take orders and give ideas. Beatty comes with many years of experience and can offer many helpful tips in choosing a beautiful arrangement.
They will also be taking orders for fresh holiday arrangements and silk arrangements. There will be various arrangements on display to help individuals get ideas.
Orders for grave blankets and cemetery wreaths can also be made tomorrow evening. Look on page 2 of today’s paper for a coupon to receive 10 percent off these orders and a special price on roses.
