It’s not often you see film cameras rolling in downtown Tyrone or a television celebrity.
But, thanks to the eagle-eyed staff of The Daily Herald, the star of a long-running hunting program and his film crew did not go undetected when they pulled up in front of the newspaper office last week to take some background shots of the borough.
Staffers thought maybe a television news crew was in town covering some breaking news story. Instead, when this reporter went to check on the activity, he was greeted by two southern gentlemen who explained why they were filming in the area.
Brock Ray is the host of a program called “Better Built’s World of Outdoors.” Ray, knowing which side “the bread is buttered on,” quickly pointed out Better Built is “the world’s largest tool box manufacturer.”
Ray said he is the host of the program which has been on the air for the last dozen years. He noted he and his crew enjoyed the paths in the area, liked the town and had the opportunity to hunt at QuestHaven Lodge.
Ray and his crew are not new to the area, they had hunted at QuestHaven last year. Ray said they hunted white-tailed deer. He and his group had been in the Tyrone area since Sunday of last week and by mid-week they were wrapping up production and were headed to Reynoldsville.
“Right now is our whitetail season,” said Ray. “From September to the end of January, we’ll travel from Pennsylvania to Missouri to Michigan to Illinois to Wisconsin.
“We did two shows while we were here,” said Ray. “We film about a year in advance.”
In fact, hunting filmed last year at QuestHaven is being shown now on the program which airs on the Outdoor Channel. The program features Ray and others who take viewers on hunting and fishing trips across North America and beyond.
The program airs this week at the following times: Wednesday Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m., Thursday Oct. 28 at 6 a.m. and Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1 a.m.
According to a program description, this week’s show has Ray traveling to Pennsylvania “to take on one of the largest whitetails he has ever taken.”
The Outdoor Channel is available to satellite television subscribers and some cable customers.
