Compost bins are readily available to Blair County residents for $5 at the Blair County Compost Facility.
Backyard composting turns unwanted materials such as leaves, grass clippings and vegetative waste into a valuable soil amendment for the lawn, garden or houseplants.
Composting in the backyard is also beneficial because it helps reduce the amount of material sent to landfills.
Individuals may purchase a bin during operating hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Note that the winter schedule, beginning Monday, November 22, will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be no Saturday hours. Due to the Thanksgiving holiday and the safety of clientele and staff during the opening of deer season, the facility will close at 4 p.m., Tuesday, November 23 and will reopen Thursday, December 2, at 8 a.m.
The Compost Facility is located on Blacksnake Road off of Route 36 near the village of Buckhorn. From Altoona, take Route 36 north to Skyline Drive. Make a right turn onto Skyline Drive then a quick left onto Blacksnake Road.
