Members of the community are invited to attend Tyrone Hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration to be held on the hospital campus and in the hospital’s main lobby on Friday September 17 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The event will include a variety of activities for children, a 50th anniversary recognition ceremony, and a tree dedication ceremony to be held on the Reverend Dr. Samuel T. Lewis Meditation Trail.
The following is a look at the hospital’s expansion and renovation work over the past 50 years.
September 20, 1954
Tyrone Hospital opened its doors and treated its first patient.
The initial square footage of the hospital when it opened in 1954 was estimated to be 14,500 sq. ft.
1979-1982
Tyrone Hospital\’s diagnostic and inpatient facilities were updated. A new wing expanded the laboratory and radiology departments. A new emergency department was added and the area used for physical therapy was expanded. A doctor\’s dictation area, a larger business office and new patient rooms were among the improvements. A new elevator, additional obstetrics facilities, improvements to the surgical suite and an intensive cardiac care unit were part of the project. An estimated 60,000 square feet was added to the hospital during this construction/renovation project.
1982
The Tyrone Hospital Board of Directors, in an effort to obtain the advantages of cooperative experience, voted to become a managed facility of HCA currently known as Quorum Health Resources, Inc. and the hospital has remained a Quorum managed facility since then.
1984
This was a year of expansion of services. Clinics in ophthalmology, urology, and orthopedics were established and the ICCU was expanded.
Laser technology was added to the hospital\’s surgical capabilities. An outdoor solarium was added.
1986-1987
The hospital acquired equipment for mammography, arthroscopic surgery, a chemical analyzer for the laboratory, and a C-arm image intensifier.
