Philipsburg police report that a Morrisdale man was the victim of an emerging Internet scam called “Phishing.”
In Phishing, computer criminals set up fictitious web sites and then e-mail customers of such sites as AOL, EBay and Pay Pal, etc.
The customers are told they need to update their account information and are provided an URL address for which to click on.
Once the victim clicks the URL address, they are taken to a fraudulent web site that is similar to that of legitimate Internet companies.
On that web site the victims are prompted to enter personal information such as account information and pin numbers.
The Morrisdale man, after entering bank account information, found that actors in Romania had withdrawn a total of approximately $700 from his bank account.
