Volunteer AARP driver safety instructor, Larry Hainley, has announced that two driver safety classes for individuals ages 50 and older are scheduled for April in Tyrone and Bellwood.
A class is scheduled for 9 a.m., April 19-20 at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library. This class is sponsored by the Bellwood-Antis Council of Churches. To register for this course, contact Polly or Burt Hopkins at 742-8401 between 9-7 p.m. weekdays.
Another class is scheduled for 9 a.m., April 26-27 at Epworth Manor, 925 S. Lincoln Ave., Tyrone. To register, contact Melissa Harpster at 686-2650 during normal business hours, weekdays.
Individuals 55 years old or older who complete the eight-hour course are eligible for a state-mandated five percent discount on their auto insurance for a three-year period.
If there are two or more individuals age 55 or older on an automobile policy, all must take the course to be eligible for the discount.
A $10 fee per participant is required to cover handouts and student materials. Checks or money orders should be made payable to AARP. All participants must be preregistered and prepaid to attend a class. AARP membership is not required.
Early registration and payment is encouraged to reserve a seat since class size is limited.
According to Hainley, AARP developed the eight-hour classroom refresher course to help older drivers improve their driving skills and prevent crashes. The course covers age-related physical changes in perception and reaction time, rules of the road, changes in state law, and local driving problems, among other topics.
