The Tyrone Women’s Club is set to host the third annual TAG (Tyroners Are Great) yard sale to benefit the Tyrone-Snyder Library on Saturday, May 15 at Reservoir Park.
“We feel very strongly about helping out the library,” said Amy Emenhiser of the Women’s Club. “We have a lot of things planned for this year including something new.
“We will have the Rotary Club involved and they will be selling their famous barbecue chicken,” said Emenhiser.
“All the other events from the previous years will be back including a bake sale, a yard sale and a raffle.”
Radio station WTRN is expected to do a live broadcast and there will be also entertainment featuring “Big Mac and Fries” in the amphitheater.
The event is scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. with the amphitheater performance starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. according to Emenhiser. Blair County Community Action will be at the event and made the arrangements for the day’s entertainment.
Emenhiser explained the group will be accepting slightly used items such as furniture, household items and anything else people would like to donate except clothing.
The event will be set up the day before the event. The Bald Eagle Methodist Pack 103 of the Boy Scouts is scheduled to guard the items and other materials at the park from Friday into Saturday with an overnight encampment.
“ The Boy Scouts really have a lot of fun doing it and they are provided with pizza and soda,” said Emenhiser. “This is going to be a younger group this year than in the past, they’ll even be building a campfire as part of it.
“We’ve had rain the past two years and we are hoping for good weather during this year,” said Emenhiser.
New items will be raffled during what Emenhiser described as a “Chinese auction.” Some of this year’s items include a blender valued at $80, a snowman/candle Christmas basket valued at more than $60, a basketball hoop and a table soccer game. All of the items are donated by different businesses and the raffle portion of the event usually generates about $300.
The Beta Sigma Pi sorority will be providing lunch items including sloppy joes, hot dogs, etc.
Lorie Eckert from the sorority explained volunteers will be on hand at the end of the event to help with the cleanup. Any remaining items are donated to organizations including The Salvation Army.
“The Women’s Club has come through for us for years,” said Lynne Nearhoof, library director. “Anytime we’ve had a major project they’ve been there even dating back to the late 70s.”
At the time, the library moved from one location on Logan Avenue to its most recent location on that street.
“We were in need of furniture because the library was expanding to a larger facility,” explained Nearhoof.
“There was a school that was closing and the Women’s Club was able to obtain some of the school’s furniture and use it in the children’s room.
“Now, we have outgrown the Logan Avenue building and they (the women’s club) are helping again with these yard sales.”
The Library is completing its move from Logan Avenue to the new location at Pennsylvania Avenue and 10th Street. Next week is scheduled to be a big week with the library officially opening at noon on Tuesday, a ribbon-cutting is set for Thursday and a fund-raiser concert featuring “The Vogues” is scheduled for Saturday, April 17.
Those wishing to donate items can contact Emenhiser to make arrangements at 937-3524. Pick up can be arranged for the elderly or handicapped.
The TAG yard sale has generated about $3,000 each of the last two years and organizers are hoping for even better results this year.
