Pop singer Davy Jones has been booked to appear at DelGrosso Amusement Park on Sunday, June 27 as part of an oldies concert scheduled that day.
The concert is listed on a flyer being distributed at the park offices in Tipton and a spokesperson at the park confirmed the appearance was just recently added. The event is also listed on Jones’ web site at www.davyjones.net. Jones will be making his second appearance at the park according to marketing representative, Tom Riley.
“He appeared at the park in 1999 and we are thrilled to have him do an encore performance,” Riley told The Daily Herald. “Of all the performers who’ve appeared at the park, he’s the one people have told us they’d like to see again.”
Jones was once part of the 1960s Emmy Award winning television program, “The Monkees.” He has also appeared as a serious actor and comedian on the theatrical stage as well as his work as a rock musician, composer and artist.
Jones is also a horseman and continues to train and ride his own racehorses. In 1996, Jones road his prized racehorse, Digpast to a first place finish in a race in England.
“I\’ve always thought if all the show business success hadn\’t happened, I\’d have been a world champion jockey. It\’s in my blood. I\’ve always dreamed of going back to England and riding a few winners,” said Jones in comments posted on his web site.
Jones was born in Manchester, England on December 30, 1945. He began entertaining at the age 11 as Ena Sharples\’ grandson on the still-running BBC soap opera, Coronation Street. He was then sought out by theatrical agents as he was working as an apprentice jockey in Newmarket, and took him to London where he portrayed Dickens\’ mischievous Artful Dodger in the West End production of “Oliver.”
Later, at the age of 16, Jones originated the Artful Dodger role on Broadway and was nominated for a Tony Award
As a result, Jones was offered a contract with Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems Television, and “The Monkees” was created a short while later.
Ward Sylvester, the executive producer of “The Monkees”, was my manager at the time. We looked for different types of guys to be part of his idea for this TV show,” stated Jones on his web site. “Then Micky, Peter, Mike and I were put together in one scene and everyone said, ‘That\’s it … magic! We\’ll use you four.’”
In addition to the show, the four men formed a musical group by the same name and The Monkees\’ album sales surpassed all records, and they continue to be best-sellers 30 years later.
Jones still does theatrical work and has come full circle in “Oliver.” He recently received raved reviews for starring in the complex role of Fagin. He has also starred in other productions.
Perhaps the most celebrated television of his career was as a heartthrob is “The Brady Bunch” episode, “Getting Davy Jones.” Not only was he Marcia Brady\’s dream prom date. His web site lists the episode as one of the most frequently aired reruns in television history. Jones reprised the role in the 1990s in the cinematic release, “The Brady Bunch Movie.”
Jones is also a writer, a photographer and a motivational speaker and a regular on the charity sports circuit.
