The Tyrone Police Department was dispatched Sunday afternoon to the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident at the I-99 southbound exit ramp at the intersection of State Route 453 (11th Street Extension). Killed in the crash was 80-year-old Marian Eckley of Tyrone.
The two-vehicle accident occurred at about 2:10 p.m. according to a report released this morning by Tyrone Borough Police Chief Joseph Beachem.
An investigation revealed a 1992 Nissan flatbed truck, driven by a Huntingdon County man, exited I-99 southbound at the Tyrone exit. The driver told police while he was on the ramp the vehicle had a brake malfunction which caused a complete loss of brakes. The truck proceeded through the stop sign at the intersection of Route 453 and struck a car driven by Clarence Eckley of Tyrone. The truck impacted the passenger side of the Eckley’s vehicle.
Eckley’s wife, Marian, was in the passenger side of the car and was killed, according to the police report.
Both vehicles came to a rest at the entrance ramp to I-99 south, crossing all lanes of traffic.
The Tyrone Police Department contacted the Pennsylvania State Police to conduct an inspection of the truck. The results of the inspection are pending and the investigation is continuing on the incident.
The press release did not reveal the name of the person injured in the accident or the name of the driver of the truck. The police also have not announced any charges regarding the incident as of this morning.
