Wildlife feeds have become an important retail business at Tyrone Milling.
Co-owner David Hershey said the interest in helping Mother Nature supplement diets of wildlife really began about 10 years ago, but has taken off fully in the past few years.
“We thought this growing interest should be addressed,” said Hershey. “There are a lot of people out there wanting to help out. It’s not just hunters either. It’s for everbody.”
Tomorrow, beginning at 9 a.m., a seminar designed to educate the public on feeding wild whitetail deer is scheduled at the Tyrone Elks. The event is sponsored by Tyrone Milling.
“This is the first year that we’re doing this publicly,” explained Ken Johnson, nutritionist at Tyrone Milling. “We feed a lot of commercial deer and elk herds and normally provide formal information to the owners. This gives us the opportunity to talk to more people.”
According to Hershey, the event will last about two hours and will feature three different speakers. He said it will provide those attending with feeding information and topics concerning the planting of deer crops.
Johnson plans to describe supplemental grains and minerals important to a deer’s nutrition. Also, Mike Berrena from Feedway will discuss plant variety and Tyrone Milling co-owner Bud Boom will discuss soil preparation.
“This meeting is going to educate people who want to know more about supplementing the nutritional diet of deer,” said Johnson. “We’re hoping this helps the herds grow better and also reduce grazing practices in native food areas.”
Johnson said so far, there has been plenty of interest expressed from the public concerning the meeting. He said he expects between 100 and 150 people to show up.
Coffee and doughnuts will be available beginning at 9:15 a.m. with speakers beginning at 9:30 a.m
