Starting now, you can satisfy your sweet tooth and help to support local Girl Scout organizations at the same time.
Today starts the annual cookie sale for Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis Girl Scouts, and it will continue until January 26.
There are eight delicious varieties of Girl Scout cookies to choose from including: the most popular Girl Scout Cookie, the Thin Mint; a vanilla cookie covered with caramel, coconut and chocolate stripes, the Samoa; a peanut butter patty with chocolate coating, the Tagalong; a tender shortbread cookie, the Trefoil; an oatmeal cookie with peanut butter filling, the Do-Si-Do; a shortbread with fudge bottom, the All Abouts; a new, reduced fat, lemon flavored vanilla cookie, the Lemon Cooler; and a new dark chocolate cookie with chocolate chips, the Double Dutch.
For more than 85 years, Girl Scouts have been selling cookies as a fundraiser. The cookies contain no artificial preservatives and are made with 100 percent vegetable shortening.
Cookies cost $3 per box. Sale dates begin today and end January 26. Delivery station dates are scheduled for February 23-27. Customer delivery dates are scheduled for March 1-14.
All cookie sale revenues remain within the local Girl Scout councils. Each troop receives 50 cents per box of cookies and 55 cents if the troop averages over 85 sold per girl.
A portion of each package of Girl Scout cookies sold goes to Girl Scout troops to fund troop activities such as field trips, camp outings and community service projects.
Girl Scout councils receive a portion of the proceeds to fund recruitment and training of adult volunteers, maintain campgrounds, and support council-wide initiatives including science centers, career workshops, and financial assistance for girls.
Through the cookie sale, Girl Scouts are gaining hands-on experience to become future corporate executives, entrepreneurs and business owners.
“Every year during the Girl Scout cookie program activities, our girls practice what it takes to be successful in business,” said Frankie Graham, executive director.
“You see the wheels turning as they figure out new and innovative ways to reach the goals they set and take pride and ownership in their plans. This is their chance to test themselves in the world of commerce.”
With the program, Girl Scouts learn to set goals and develop a plan for reaching those goals. With the help of Girl Scout volunteers, they gain first-hand experience in handling money, taking orders, tallying sales and arranging for deliveries.
Girl Scout cookies may be ordered directly from participating Girl Scouts or by calling the Girl Scout Center in Johnstown at (814) 536-5371 or in Duncansville at (814) 695-8510.
