For the second consecutive year, the Tyrone Community Partnership is sponsoring its annual Yuletide Tyrone soup tasting contest, scheduled for December 11 from 5-8 p.m. at the Tyrone Social Center, formerly the Citizens Social Hall.
Individuals are invited to sample the best soups from area restaurants and businesses, and vote for the favorite. Prizes will be awarded to the restaurants and businesses whose soup is voted the best.
Participants include: Joybeans, Original Italian Pizza, Burleys, The Bull Pen, Thelma’s Cafe, The Altoona Curve, La Scalia’s, Meal Rescuers and Racers.
Holiday door prizes, along with a raffle drawing for numerous holiday center pieces will also take place.
Currently, it is planned that the Altoona Curve mascots, Steamer and Diesel Dog, will be making an appearance at the soup tasting contest. Holiday cookies and cookie mixes will be available for purchase as well.
According to president of the Tyrone Community Partnership, Ray Liddick, Jr., the soup tasting contest was started as a fund raiser by Mayor Patricia Stoner when she developed the Yuletide Tyrone campaign. Last year, the Tyrone Community Partnership sponsored the event, and the proceeds were given to Yuletide Tyrone.
“This year, the Tyrone Community Partnership is holding the event as a fund raiser for the partnership,” said Liddick. “The proceeds will aid and assist us as we move forward with purchasing the Tyrone Social Center from Reliance Bank. In addition, future fund raisers will be used to not only support the social center, but to also better prepare us as we look to get into the state funded Main Street program.”
Tickets for the soup tasting contest can be purchased in advance at the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce, Open Door Visions, and at other Tyrone Merchant locations, or by calling 684-4116.
Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the event. Ticket prices are: $4 for adults, $2 for children ages 4-12 and children under three eat for free.
“In addition to being a fund raiser, the partnership wants to be able to provide community-based events and functions for the general public to attend. We have received a large amount of good feedback on how nice these event are, how the residents of Tyrone enjoy being able to socialize with one another, in a nice atmosphere with good food,” said Liddick. “All in all, our feedback from the residents has been very positive, and we feel it is a core part of why and what we do as Tyrone Community Partnership.”
The trio of pasta held at the social center in November was deemed a success as over 160 people attended. Upcoming plans and activities at the social center include: January 15, community dinner with theme to be announced; February 12, Valentine’s special; February 20-21, meals for Tyrone area residents and those visiting for the district wrestling tournament; March 6, children’s carnival and March 18, St. Patrick’s dinner.
