The Tyrone Area Historical Society will celebrate the one year anniversary of its history museum located in the Bud Shuster Intermodel Transportation Center building at the end of Pennsylvania Avenue, at the Rail Park.
On November 20, 2002 the museum opened its doors to the public and has seen a great response to the museum over the course of its first year. Founded in 1990, The Tyrone Area Historical Society’s mission is to awaken in the residents of the area an interest and appreciation of Tyrone’s historical past.
Two special exhibits in the museum’s first year in particular have stood out. The Fred Waring exhibit during the month of June and the recent Speedway exhibit held in October have been the highlights of the first year of operation.
“We want to thank all of the people who volunteer at the museum on Sundays and Wednesdays,” said historical society President Nancy Smith in the societies fall newsletter.
Also thanks has been given to the local media outlets including The Daily Herald and WTRN radio for covering the opening and special events. Pat and Gary Griffith coordinated the materials for the speedway exhibit and shared their personal collection of items.
With the opening of the museum last November, the historical society now has two facilities available to its members and visitors. The other is the office and research library located in the Tyrone Shopping Center, open on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. or by appointment.
The Tyrone Area Historical Society continues to work on special projects to be featured in the museum, including possible mini exhibits on the Wilson Chemical Company and the Sheridan Troop.
The museum is open to the public during their winter hours. Sundays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. from November 2 through December 21, 2003. The museum will be closed for the holidays from December 24 through January 3, 2004. It reopens on Sundays only from January 4 through March 7, 2004. The museum then resumes its Sunday and Wednesday schedule on March 10, 2004. The museums phone number is 684-5141.
