Reclamere, Inc. in partnership with Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 and the Chester County Intermediate Unit have launched a state-wide computer recycling program for all 501 Pennsylvania school districts.
“Reclamere believes that this program will provide a legal, safe and cost-effective option for school districts to utilize,” said Joseph P. Harford, vice-president Sales & Marketing of Reclamere, Inc.
The amount of computer equipment that school districts are faced with disposing is quite overwhelming. In addition, the costs associated in the past with recycling have been a financial burden. This program is voluntary and being promoted by the other intermediate units in the state.
“Reclamere is convinced that the service is a value to the schools and will help them to eliminate both environmental liability and maintain student and faculty privacy,” added Harford.
Based on the projected growth and obsolescence rates of the various categories of consumer electronics it is estimated that somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 billion units will be scrapped during the rest of this decade – or an average of about 400 million units a year.
