The second class of distinguished alumni honored by the Tyrone Area School District started a busy weekend of activities yesterday.
The class of 2003 includes Dr. Robert Charles, Dr. David Morrow and Robert Hickes were honored at last night’s football game and at a dinner this evening at the Bull Pen.
Charles, who was the commencement speaker for the class of 2003, is a 1963 graduate of TAHS. He went on to Bucknell University to get his bachelors degree and eventually earned a doctorate from the Massachusettes Institute of Technology. Charles went on to work at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico. Los Alamos is the nation’s premier research laboratory. He served at Los Alamos as a research scientist and in a variety of management positions.
Morrow, went from being a young boy on the farm in Sinking Valley to Penn State to graduate with a bachelors degree in dairy science. Morrow graduatuated from Cornell University with a PhD. He went on to Michigan State University’s college of Veterinary Medicine. He retired in 1990 with the rank of Professor Emeritus.
Hickes, a three-sport athlete at TAHS, went on to Shippensburg University to start as a tight end and was a captain of the football team his senior year. He eventually went on to serve 30 years with the Pennsylvania State Police. With the PSP, Hickes worked through the ranks to earn the position of deputy commissioner of staff before retiring in January. He commanmded Pennsylvania law enforcement response to the crash site of Flight 93 in Shanksville on September 11, 2001.
The honorees spent the day Friday touring the school and talking with students.
