There is only one race in Bellwood borough in the November 2003 election. Bellwood Borough Council has one seat open. John Gunsallus is seeking a fifth term and will be facing Kenneth Conrad.
“It is very enjoyable serving on council,” said Gunsallus. “I like seeing things get done. There are a lot of great people in the borough and we have been fortunate to not have a tax hike in many years. It also is great to work with the school and different companies in the borough. I enjoy being involved in the community.”
The four-term Democrat is also chairman of the Bellwood Water Authority.
“We need to work on improving our water and sewer system,” said Gunsallus. “It is an old system that I would like to see revitalized.
Gunsallus also serves on the Bellwood-Antis Parks and Recreation Commission and looks forward to the Northern Blair Recreation Center getting built.
“I believe that Bellwood should have a role in the facility,” said Gunsallus. “This is going to be a great asset to all the communities around here. It will benefit Bellwood, Antis Township, Tyrone and the surrounding areas.”
With the recent closing of Beaver Prints, Gunsallus believes that tax breaks for business will benefit Bellwood.
“We approved the LERTA Zone in our last meeting,” said Gunsallus. “This gives tax breaks on expansions and new construction over the next five years. We need to do our part to help grow business in Bellwood Borough.”
Gunsallus is hoping to serve a fifth term on Bellwood’s governing body.
“I want to work to keep the taxes down,” said Gunsallus. “We haven’t had a tax hike in many years. I also want to keep the water and sewer rates down. One of my goals is to have a better working relationship with Antis Township. We have a good relationship right now, but I feel that we can work together more often and accomplish more things together.”
Gunsallus is on the Democratic ballot in the November election.
