Saturday, October 25, 2003 has been set as the Tyrone taping date for the award winning WPSX “Our Town” series.
However, 20 to 25 local residents are needed to shoot video for the hour-long community special to be produced.
According to Greg Petersen, director of programming for the public broadcasting station, only seven people have stepped forward to help with the project.
“That is not enough,” said Petersen. “We need at least 20 people to sign up. No experience is needed and there is no cost to participate. We need community minded residents to volunteer. We would hate to have to cancel the project.”
Residents who sign up can shoot video in the Tyrone area, including Tipton, Warriors Mark and Sinking Valley. Two pre-production meetings have been scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, and Wednesday, October 15. At the meetings, show topics and brainstorming will be discussed and everyone will have an idea on what to shoot for their side of the project.
The program, when finished, will be broadcast in December, during one of the station’s on-air membership campaigns. From all of the 25 hours of footage recorded by residents, the best footage will be used and they will narrate and tell stories for the program about the footage that was shot while the natural sound of the video plays to the audience.
The Daily Herald is working with WPSX as a media partner, and recruitment of volunteers has been going on for several weeks. Another 13 to 14 people are needed, and it’s as easy as picking up the phone and calling either the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce at 684-0736 or Greg Petersen at WPSX-TV toll free at 1-800-245-9779. Residents will be asked to attend only one of the two pre-production meetings and each volunteer will be supplied free video tape for the assignment.
The “Our Town” series has produced projects for communities including Huntingdon, Bedford, Bellefonte, Altoona, Punxsutawney, Indiana and more.
A special town-wide preview for volunteers, their guests and other invited quests will be held in Tyrone about a week prior to the programs broadcast on Channel 3. The original tapes of your footage will be returned to residents after the post production phase of the project.
