The Tyrone Area YMCA 2003-04 fall/winter programming guide is now available with a list of programs that are scheduled to begin on Monday, September 8.
These programs include: active older adult exercise, yoga, swimming lessons, women on weights and dance academy. A full listing of programs offered at the YMCA is available in the programming guide.
One of the main changes that is not listed in the guide is the girls’ youth basketball program has been postponed due to conflicts with other area activities and minimum requirements being met.
“After investigating and speaking with parents and other individuals, it has been determined that it would be better if the league was postponed until May,” said program director David Shildt. “Therefore, this Sunday’s draft day is canceled, and full refunds will be available. All other leagues will still continue as scheduled.”
Shildt also said those who already signed up for the league will receive a phone call regarding the league postponement. Any other questions should be directed to Shildt at the YMCA at 684-2740.
“We’re sorry for the inconvenience, but hopefully a stronger girls’ summer basketball league will form this May,” added Shildt.
Some minor changes have also been made to the adult three-on-three basketball league regarding scoring, rules and team set-up. For more details on the league contact the YMCA.
One of the programs highlighted in the fall/winter programming guide is the active older adult fitness and exercise group taught by Sue Busche. This class is for adults 55 years or older and focuses on low impact stretching and movement. The goal is to emphasize the stretching and toning of target areas in order to maintain the body’s flexibility. Participants may work out at their own pace in order to maintain or increase their endurance level.
Another program highlighted is yoga taught by Maho Hisakawa. She teaches participants basic yoga postures in the Kripalu and Iyengar traditions that will relax, tone and strengthen the body and mind. This will be accompanied with breathing exercises, muscle stretching and abdominal strengtheners.
There is also women on weights with instructor Nate Verilla. This beginner-level course is designed to give women the opportunity to learn the basic fundamentals of strength training. It also challenges the participants to work outside of their comfort zone to maximize their goals.
Swimming lessons will also be offered for children ages three and older. The activities will take place at the pool located at the Tyrone Area High School. Each level of swimming lessons includes personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games, personal growth and rescue.
The YMCA welcomed two new dance instructors to start the fall/winter season, Bethany Miller and Abigail Park. Along with ballet, pointe, jazz and tap, classes in modern and lyrical dance will be offered. A pre-ballet and creative movement class for pre-schoolers is offered as well.
Numerous other classes and programs are offered at the YMCA. For more information, stop at the front desk for a fall/winter programming guide or call the YMCA during regular business hours.
