It’s that time of year again for girls’ youth basketball registration at the Tyrone Area YMCA, and volunteer coaches are needed to make this year’s program a success.
The girls’ youth league is open to area girls in third through sixth grade.
For Tyrone YMCA members, the cost is $20, and the cost for non-members is $30. The payment is required before the day of the draft.
Player registration began yesterday and is scheduled to run until noon on Friday, September 5. The draft day is scheduled for Sunday, September 7 at 11 a.m.
Roster sizes and the number of teams will be determined by the number of paid participants.
Team practices could start as early as Monday, September 8, and gym sign-up is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The gym schedule will be available at the front desk of the YMCA.
The first regular season games are scheduled to begin Sunday, September 28 at 1 p.m. Unless scheduled otherwise, all games will be played on Sundays.
Volunteer coaches are needed in order for the league to operate. Interested individuals who want to help out must be reliable, dependable and have some knowledge of basketball. This is a great way to provide a positive influence for all involved in the program.
Referees and scorekeepers are also needed for the league, and these are paid positions. Background and knowledge of basketball rules and scoring is required.
Program director David Shildt said the information about the boys’ basketball league will be arriving soon, but he is still busy compiling the information for the fall programming guide.
“We had an issue concerning our publisher program,” explained Shildt. “We regret any problems this may cause our members as well as the public. However, this issue is beyond our control and we ask for patience. The necessary information is being compiled but then still needs to be finalized prior to printing. Also, I want to be sure that every bit of information in the guide is correct and easy to understand.”

In more Tyrone Area YMCA news, a new dance instructor and assistant have been hired. The dance instructor is Bethany (Fouss) Miller, and the assistant is Abby Park.
“We are very excited to announce that we have hired a new dance instructor and an assistant for the Tyrone Area YMCA dance classes,” added Shildt. “Both have a very good background in the field of dance. They are two very motivated individuals, and we are proud to have them as part of our team.”
Saturday, August 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. is a scheduled open house at the YMCA dance studio. Information will be available for interested individuals about the dance classes and programming.
