I want to start by thanking you for reading The Daily Herald.
It is Saturday, and the weekend is in full swing.
There are many things on my mind as we head into this weekend.
First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers are with the soldiers and family members of our military. When we are not at war, many people forget how valuable they are to the freedom of our nation. When we are at war and with the advances in communications technology, you get more amazed at what our military can do.
I was most impressed Thursday with General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, when he was asked by a reporter: Would the military be over confident because it was predicted that we would meet little resistance from the Iraqi Army?
Myers answered, “There is nothing easy about combat.” Never has a more true statement been said.
My job during Operation Desert Storm was easy. I edited videotape and did a radio show on the Armed Forces Desert Network.
I lived in a condo and drove a Nissan Pathfinder. My life was easy. Until the first SCUD missile was launched at us. We had no idea whether it was a chemical or biological weapon. You didn’t think. You quickly put your chemical suit on, but also prayed that it was a conventional weapon.
I am very proud of the eight years of service to my country. I am proud to have many friends who are still serving in the armed services.
I believe in the first ammendment right to free speech, but I also believe that that right goes out the window when the speech hurts others.
I believe protests are like life. You may not agree with the way your supervisor wants things done. If you have a chance to influence the decision, speak your mind. When the final decision is made, you do what is asked of you, bite your tounge and collect your paycheck.
That is what I think about protestors. If you don’t like the policy, speak early. When the policy is put into action, support the troops who are putting their lives on the line.
