Hard work and a good work ethic has paid off for a Tyrone woman.
Recently, Vicky Shaw, RN, was awarded the Extra Mile award at Tyrone Hospital. She works in the hospital’s obstetrics unit and newborn nursery. Shaw is a seasoned obstetrics nurse who has also had some experience in medical surgical nursing care.
Her hospital story began the she was born – at Tyrone Hospital. She was raised in the Tyrone and graduated from Tyrone High School in 1973. She said she was “raised” on the hospital as her father was an employee of the institution for 25 years.
In 1974, she completed nursing training at Altoona Vocational-Technical School and became a licensed practical nurse. She worked at the hospital from 1974 to 1975 as an LPN until she left the area to travel with her husband, who was enlisted in the military.
While “on tour” with her husband, she worked and volunteered in military health clinics, and was a first aid and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross.
Shaw completed additional nurse training in 1999, earning her credentials as a registered nurse at Orange County Community College in Middletown, N.Y. She then returned to Tyrone and Tyrone Hospital, choosing to keep her talents as a medical professional in her hometown.
“I am honored to be recognized by co-workers outside of my immediate department,” said Shaw. “I am very proud of Tyrone Hospital and the care we provide. The hospital is home to me. I come to work everyday knowing I am taking care of family, friends and people I’ve known all my life.”
During her career, Shaw has been the recipient of the Air Force Corp of Nursing award, the W. June Simpson Nursing award, and became a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
She participates in continuing nursing education annually and has special clinical interests in lactation, hormone replacement therapy and cardiac care as it relates to women’s health. Shaw says she has a long-term goal to complete her graduate level education in nursing and teach.
Currently, Mrs. Shaw serves as secretary and treasurer of the Tyrone Hospital Employee Fund. She has also joined with fellow night shift employees to collect greeting cards that are recycled by St. Jude’s and used as a fundraiser to benefit needy children.
The Extra Mile award is granted on a quarterly basis to an employee who demonstrates exceptional preformace.
For her recognition, she received a commemorative plaque, an extra paid personal holiday and a letter of commendation from the Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Thomas Bartlett.
“The Extra Mile Employee Award is special because it is driven by hospital employees,” said Bartlett. “It is an honor to recognize employees like Mrs. Shaw who have been singled out by their fellow co-workers and recognized for exceptional performance.”
In October, Linda Glasgow was awarded the recognition. Glasgow is the executive secretary to Bartlett and Chief Financial Officer George Semko.
