August is only a few days away. School will be starting soon and summer vacations will be ending as the area slides into autumn, with its football games, cool weather and turning leaves. For the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce, September is also the time of its largest fundraiser — the Annual Golf Classic at the Sinking Valley Country Club.
“Everyone has a really good time at this tournament,” Classic Chairperson Linda Hershey said. “It’s a great chance for people to get out and enjoy a day of golf, meet some new people, have some good food and maybe walk away with something.”
This year’s tournament is shaping up to be one area golfers won’t want to miss. Sponsored by Martin Oil and WPRR 100.1, the day kicks off at 10 a.m. with registration and wraps up after a buffet dinner, when golfers can tell tales about the one that got away. Golfers will also have the opportunity to walk away with a new truck, courtesy of Stultz & Brown, or $5,000 in cash, compliments of Martin Oil — as long as they can sink a hole-in-one. Prizes will also be awarded for first and second place, as well as such feats as closest to the pin and longest drive. There’s even a Big Bertha in the picture, courtesy of Don Ketrow, for those who want to increase their distance off the tee.
The two-person, scramble, shotgun start is at 11 a.m. and the tournament is not just for the guys, but the ladies are welcome, too, noted Hershey.
“The brochures have been sent out and registration forms are abailable at the Chamber office of Logan Avenue,” Hershey said. “We’re are still rounding up hole sponsors, and there is plenty of opportunity for local businesses to become involved.”
Hershey said that this is the Chamber’s largest fundraiser of the year — not to mention the most fun. It will allow the Chamber to continue to work to improve the business climate in the area, and it expand its efforts with new programs.
