In a battle of teams in the George B. Kelley Federation both sponsored by oil companies, Barkman Oil/Russell Trucking spanked Martin Oil 19-0 in four innings at Bellwood on Thursday evening.
Tyler Nash pitched the first three innings for Barkman and Jordan Saylor finished up the fourth inning. Between the two, they limited Martin Oil (5-4) to an anemic four singles, while Saylor and the offense pounded Martin Oil pitching for 13 hits and 19 runs. Martin Oil pitchers didn’t help themselves any, walking nine and hitting five batters.
Saylor was the offensive star getting Barman/Russell (9-1) off to a blazing start by hammering the first pitch he saw for a two-run home run in the first inning, then added a pair of two-run singles, to finish the game with six RBI. Drew Ebersole added two hits and three RBI, Jordan Hardy had two hits and two RBI, and Carl Sell delivered a pinch hit, two-run triple for the final two scores in the brutal onslaught.
Trey Mock singled on a soft, looping liner to center in the first for Martin Oil, Nate Gray and Chad Coho singled in the third, although Barkman’s Nash got out of the inning without trouble on an inning-ending double play, and Garrett Rabold singled up the middle in a pinch hitting role, in the bottom of the fourth, for the only Martin Oil base hits.
“In all my years as a coach, I have never seen a ballgame like this before,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “We have got to do something, but right now I don’t know what. It’s pretty much up to the kids if they have the heart to make a success of this season. We have a target on our backs this season after winning the league championship in three straight games over Barkman last year, and tonight they really put it to us.”
