Shown above are the 2008 Vikings and Raiders youth football teams at Gray-Vets Memorial field on Saturday October 4. The Vikings are preparing to line up on offense for what turned out to be the game-tying touchdown in this year’s Tyrone Youth Football championship game.
Viking’s coach Kevin Soellner strategically worked the clock in the fourth quarter burning up well over five minutes before Jacob Berry would punch reach paydirt with forty-two seconds left in the game.
The Vikings were then successful on the two-point conversion try to go up by the score of 22-20 and would eventually hold off the Raider’s nifty offense on the team’s final drive.
The Vikings and Raiders had split their regular season games with the Vikings defeating the Raiders in their first meeting 22-20 in overtime, while the Raiders got the upper hand in the second meeting winning 26-22. Both teams finished the regular season with matching records of 5-1.
The championship game featured Raider’s running back James Oliver who scored all three touchdowns plus the two-point conversion. Oliver scored on two long runs and caught two passes from quarterback Eric Wagner, one for a touchdown and the other for a conversion.
The Viking’s tailback Jacob Berry ran hard all day reaching the end zone five times with three touchdowns and two conversions.
With the victory the Viking’s have now won the last three Tyrone Youth football championships.
