The Tyrone Area Historical Society is happy to announce the Tyrone History Museum will reopen tomorrow, Sunday, April 6 from 1 to 4 p.m.
The museum will then be open each Sunday and Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m.
During the month of April, Kiwanis members have volunteered to staff the museum.
Afterwards, local residents volunteer their time to help guests each week.
The first exhibit to be featured this year is “Tyrone: Shopping on Memory Lane”.
Guests at the exhibit may be surprised to find out what a prosperous business town Tyrone was, at one time housing 14 hotels.
Others will be reminded of the many shops, hotels and storefronts from their childhood.
At one point, Tyrone was even home to a large department store, Lugg and Edmonds, which was located along 10th Street and Logan Avenue.
Three display cases are filled with memorabilia from past businesses including a countertop mannequin, milk jugs, photos, office supplies, company giveaways and various odds and ends.
Many of the items were used for advertising, with the store’s name prominently featured. These items were then distributed to the public.
Visitors will be able to take a peek back in time at Gardner’s Candies boxes, glass milk bottles and store advertisements.
There is a rolling pin featuring the former Albright’s grocery store, a model horse and carriage and a matchbox from The Daily Herald.
There is also a display board featuring a variety of advertisements from local businesses.
With prices on the rise these days, it’s always fun to take a look back at the cost of items in a former time.
So whether you want to return to a favorite store, or visit Tyrone’s past businesses for the first time, everyone is invited to stop by the museum to take a walk, and shop, down memory lane.
