Area middle and high school students, with interests in history, competed Wednesday in the 23rd annual District History Day at Juniata College in Huntingdon.
Students had to prepare a project, ranging from the Civil War to civil rights, but keeping with this year’s theme, “Conflict and Compromise in History.”
First through third place finishers were announced in two divisions, the junior division for grades sixth through eighth and the senior division for students in ninth through 12th grades.
Students will then have the chance to compete at the state finals competition, which will be held at Millersville University on May 13 and 14. The national finals will take place June 15-19 at the University of Maryland.
Students competed in nine categories, including: historical paper – 1,500 to 2,000 words, individuals only; individual exhibit; group exhibit; individual performance, such as short plays or interpretive readings; group performance; documentaries; group documentaries; individual webpage and group webpage.
Tyrone Area Middle and High School students participated along with 19 other schools, as well as several home-schooled students.
Juniata College students studying in history, politics, secondary education, social studies, business, psychology and other programs served as judges for the competition.
The local history senior division prize was awarded to Brice Barrett, a 10th grade student at Tyrone Area High School, for his project, “The Attempted Sabotage of the Horseshoe Curve.”
Barrett also received second place honors for this project in the Individual exhibits senior division category.
In the Individuals exhibits junior division, Tyrone eighth grader Stevie Franco placed second for his project, “Level Playing Field”.
Also, Tyrone 10th graders Logan Harper, Sam Yeaton and Pierce Cardamone competed in the group documentary senior division and placed first with their piece, “Music Censorship”.
