Strong underclassman debuts as well as the return of several seasoned veterans at yesterday’s track meet with Bald Eagle Area were not enough for Tyrone’s girls‚ team to pull out a win with the lady Eagles suffering a slim 78-72 los to BEA in their season opener.
However a boy’s victory was promising to coaches and athletes alike. The Golden Eagle boys opened their season on a bright note with an 83-67 win over Bald Eagle Area.
On both sides the day was marked by an abundance of multiple victories. For the girl’s team, Elizabeth Tepsic took wins in the 110 hurdles as well as the triple jump and a second place in the long jump. Senior Emily Lloyd took first in the high jump and second in the triple jump and 110 hurdles.
Senior Emily Ingle had a full day with firsts in the 1600m run, the 800m run and the 3200m run. Freshman Kayla Patton’s inaugural run was quite successful with a first place finish in the 400m run. The team of Patton, Weyendt, Lloyd and Ingle also took the 1600 relay. On the field it was a good day for the upperclassman girls.
Senior Ashley Turnbaugh took second place in the discus, Junior Sara Cox placed third in the Shot Put and Senior Katie Schreckengost took third in the Javelin.
Head coach Tony Yaniello comment on the girl’s results was that “We were our first time out against a team that had three dual meets already this season. We’re real pleased with the results. I like to give a lot of credit to our younger and veteran members. Like Emily Ingle who ran four distance events, won them all.
Outstanding performance by Liz Tepsic again, Kayla Patton was outstanding as a freshman. We had a lot of people contribute and to be that close in the first meet was tribute to how hungry the girls are for a victory.”
On the boy’s side, it was a great day for track and field as the men pulled in many multiple places from senior Erin Houck, sophomore John Franco, senior Chris Bradigan, senior Matt Lauder, senior Trey Brockett and sophomore Steve Catich.
The boy’s relay teams were on fire, sweeping all three events and gaining major points for the team.
However, BEA swept the discus and placed strongly in other field events, making it difficult for the Tyrone men to catch up.
“On the boys side, we had a great performance by our veterans and we had some great surprises by the younger class” commented Yaniello about the boys victory. We’re hoping to build on both meets.
“Next time we’re hoping to get better times and distances.”
The Golden Eagles take to their home track on Tuesday, April 11, in a triangular meet against Mount Union and Southern Huntingdon. The meet will start at 4 P.M.
