Last Friday afternoon, Tyrone’s junior varsity softball team visited Central High School in Martinsburg for a single game against the Central Jayvees.
After a slow start, the Tyrone juniors basked the Lady Dragons 17-1.
The Lady Eagles fell behind 1-0 after the first inning, when Central was able to push across a run without benefit of a hit. Tyrone pitcher Laura Thompson limited the damage to one run however, by recording her third strikeout of the inning with the bases loaded to end the threat.
Central threatened again in the second inning, getting their first two runners on base via a hit and a walk. At that point, Tyrone pulled off a rare gem-A Triple Play!
Second baseman Adrienne Snider started the works by snagging a line drive for out the first out. With both Central runners caught off base, Snider first threw to first baseman Teanna Kobuck to nail the runner of first. Kobuck then fired to the second base bag, where shortstop Amber Miller covered to nail the third runner before she could get back to the bag.
Tyrone finally got their offense in gear in the third inning. Thompson walked and moved over to third base on a single by Miller, and scored on an RBI base hit by Kobuck.
In the fourth, Tyrone took the lead for good. Leigha Stewart led off the stanza with a base hit. Snider followed with another single to get Stewart over to third. With runners at the corners, Amanda Detwiler’s smash grounder was mishandled by the Central shortstop to allow Stewart to score.
With the lead and pitcher Thompson in control on the mound, The Lady Eagles put the game away in the fifth. A total of 13 batters marched to the plate, with eight scoring to give Tyrone a 10-1 advantage. Highlight of the at bat was a ringing, bases-loaded triple by Teanna Kobuck that traveled to the fence in left-center field.
Tyrone then went on to add an additional seven scores in the sixth inning to invoke the 10-run Mercy Rule, ending the game with a 17-1 victory that improved their mark to 1-2.
Freshman Teanna Kobuck led the Tyrone offense with a perfect four-for-four at the plate that included a double and triple. Adrienne Snider and Amber Miller both chipped in with two hits among the Lady Eagles 11-hit attack.
Laura Thompson, also a freshman, went the distance on the mound to pick up the win, allowing just three hits and one unearned run, while striking out nine batters.
